The Power of the Stories We Tell Ourselves | Stella Beckmann | TEDxUOA
In "The Power of the Stories We Tell Ourselves," our guide through the intricate web of narratives is a storyteller with a penchant for turning life's unexpected twists into meaningful lessons. Opening with a humorous yet cringe-worthy first-date mishap at a museum, Stella shares the vulnerability of an embarrassing moment she could have let define the evening. Instead, Stella chooses to view it as a unique icebreaker. Transitioning into an exploration of the stories we internalise, Stella introduces three cognitive phenomena and illustrates their impact on our perceptions. Drawing inspiration from the transformative power of the book "Life of Pi," Stella advocates for the ability to craft empowering narratives. The second part introduces the CARE method as a practical framework for reshaping limiting beliefs. This method is elucidated through personal experiences, emphasising the importance of small wins and self-celebration. Ultimately, the talk concludes with a reminder that we are the authors of our narratives, urging the audience to embrace the power to shape their stories, one chapter at a time. Stella Beckmann is a second-year student from the University of Auckland who studies Information Systems and Marketing. Her positive approach to life is deeply shown through her talk which navigates the power of storytelling and the narratives we tell ourselves. Her interest in how perspectives are easily shifted and are drastic to an individual is a conversation which many will be able to relate to. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
