This poem explores the fantasy of flying as a metaphor for ultimate potential and freedom and the contemplation of the paradoxical hesitations and limitations one might face in pursuing these possibilities.
Potential
Imagine waking up
To morning light
Singing to the sun
Imagine soaring through skies
If I could fly,
Would I?
Imagine any place
Any time
Having whatever the heart desired
Though passions and path hardwired
If I could fly,
Would I?
Imagine fearlessness
Endless freedom
The world my oyster
Gliding toward light
If I could fly,
Would I?
Imagine the peace
Only nature’s external beasts
Clarity or perhaps lack of depth
A life predetermined
I can’t fly
I can’t try
But if I could
Why is it I wouldn’t.
