Lonely In the Green

A short creative piece about the peace of being isolated in nature, and how it brings a breath - a sense of escape - to our busy lives before inevitably, reality resumes.

Running down the mountain, all I could hear was the pounding of each footstep along the ground like a thumping heartbeat, beating away my wandering thoughts. I ran to the machine-ly beat of the pop playing through my 21st gen Airpods - a sound juxtaposing the natural beauty enticing me. Pressing pause, silence settled in. Just my pounding feet and my jagged breathing against the whispering trees. Lonely in the green. Heaven. My body moved faster as the hill got steeper, and my legs took leaps too long. I felt a wobble in my knees and for a moment wondered what would happen if I collapsed onto the concrete. I kept running because tuning into my body’s senses would be better than tuning into memories of me and the boy that’s a stranger now. Then I saw blondeness, slimness, branded sports attire... “Did you know AGS is holding the cocktail party that Friday night? Why would they choose that night?”. Ugh, high school cocktail parties for highbrow parents. Funnnnnnn. A dog ran past barking while a car’s beeping pierced the air, and my mind once again became like the fog enveloping me. I’d be home soon and the day would resume.
